Summary

Remember how I sad that if some jerk caught me carrying a book with "diary" on the cover, they were gonna get the wrong idea? Well, that's exactly what happened today。

Now that Rodrick knows I have another journal, I'd better remember to keep this one locked up。 Rodrick actually got hold of my last journal。。。 But don't even get me started on THAT story。 Even without my Rodrick problems, my summer was pretty lousy。

Whatever you do, don't ask me how I spent my summer holiday because I definitely don't want to talk about it。

This book is about his brother and how he is mean。 He basically controls Greg and bosses him around。 He does it behind his parent's back too。 This book is about his brother and how he is mean。 He basically controls Greg and bosses him around。 He does it behind his parent's back too。 。。。more

Well, this second book in the series certainly defies the classic writing advice that you must have a character arc。SPOILER ALERTI thought the first book was funny, fast-paced, cleverly illustrated, and skillfully written, but it disturbed me that such a selfish, cruel, remorseless kid could learn absolutely nothing and not grow at all as a person。 I thought, "Okay, maybe he will learn something in the next book。" So…I waited a few years and read this one。 Did he learn? Well…he does one little nice (but unethical) thing for his brother at the end—though it's not really nice when you think about it。 So…no。 I really don't think he learned anything or grew or changed。 He's still selfish, cruel, and remorseless。 When he plays a mean trick on his "best friend" that results in the best friend breaking his toe and suffering great pain, guess who Greg casts as the villain in the story? His best friend。 For telling the truth about what happened。 And this isn't an accident。 If Greg is as smart as he claims, he KNOWS what will happen when his friend kicks the dumbbell Greg has hidden under a pillow。 When Greg convinces half the school to pretend his other "friend" is invisible, the prank goes on and on。 They carry it so far that it turns into real cruelty。 Is this a pro-bullying book? At one point Greg admits that one action of his was a bit cruel, and I thought, "At last! An epiphany。" But then…no。 Greg just congratulates himself on being the class clown and continues the cruelty。 He's constantly denigrating his friends and everyone else。 He cheats and lies a lot。 The only time he ever feels remorse is when he gets caught, and it's not really remorse。 It's just anger at being caught。You can accuse me of being judgy if you like, but I believe in kindness, which I don't think is a particularly radical philosophy。 I like imperfect characters and ones who get themselves in funny scrapes。 I like characters who are realistic (which means they may be sometimes selfish, sometimes arrogant, sometimes rash。) But I don't like characters who are always selfish, arrogant, and rash, who are often cruel, and who never learn or grow。 And I simply don't think that Greg is a character I would ever, ever want my children emulating or admiring。 Yet it's not treated as a cautionary tale, so…it's disturbing。 Hopefully I'm not giving enough credit to this book's young readers。 Maybe they're all reading it with the understanding that Greg is a jerk。As for the actual writing, it's still skillful and funny (though it didn't strike me as funny as the first)。 The drawings are still great。 The pacing and interest it piques in kids are still admirable。 But no, despite the good writing, and the way it gets kids reading (yay!) I would not really recommend it。 Sorry。 Warning: cruelty (by the main character), bullying (by the main character), character being congratulated for spying on girls in the locker room。 。。。more

Picked 4 stars because the book is funny and interesting to read。 Someone else should read this because you can see how Rodrick messes around with Greg and how Greg deals with this almost everyday。 I would change this book bye making it so that Greg can at least get revenge on his brother。

This is my second Diary of a Wimpy Kid book (I read book #4 first), and it was fun and funny and silly and - most importantly - Greg thinks his life is Just So Unfair。Dealing with Middle Child Syndrome, and the dual issues of having an annoying little brother to go with his annoying big brother, Greg is your average preteen stuck in a seventh-grade world。The illustrations and the text accompanying those illustrations make these books so great。 This is my second Diary of a Wimpy Kid book (I read book #4 first), and it was fun and funny and silly and - most importantly - Greg thinks his life is Just So Unfair。Dealing with Middle Child Syndrome, and the dual issues of having an annoying little brother to go with his annoying big brother, Greg is your average preteen stuck in a seventh-grade world。The illustrations and the text accompanying those illustrations make these books so great。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I enjoyed this one as much as the first! Oh how I cringed when Greg was telling us about taking care of the neighbors dog over the summer and not letting cleaning anything up。 I cringed with the first one even。 No one with a pet likes cleaning up gigantic messes。 I could understand his logic and thought process but I definitely would not like to be that person owner。I hope the rest of the series keeps up this pace and momentum。 I have up to book four。 Hopefully I can get a copy of the others soo I enjoyed this one as much as the first!
